EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
