Similar to the recent storm swept through the north-west the night before, City overwhelmed the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their championship potential as they consolidated their place at the league summit.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline marked consecutive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' capacity to manage domestic and European soccer with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no similar fitness worries. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since returning from a fitness issue.

The primary change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the match. Former City player Park came closest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a strong position after the opening fixtures.
